Getting to know Kragujevac
Kragujevac is the administrative center of the Šumadija region and one of the most important academic and historical cities in Serbia. Located in the central part of the country, it is home to the University of Kragujevac and represents a vibrant university city with a strong tradition in education, research, and industry.
The city played a crucial role in Serbian history as the first modern capital of Serbia in the 19th century, where key state institutions, including the first constitution, were established. Today, Kragujevac combines a dynamic academic environment with cultural heritage, green spaces, and a welcoming atmosphere for international visitors.
One of the most important landmarks is Šumarice Memorial Park, a significant historical site and peaceful green area near the city center. The city also features museums, galleries, cultural institutions, and lively cafés and restaurants where participants can experience Serbian hospitality and cuisine.
Kragujevac Attractions
Topola and Oplenac (40 km) – a historic royal complex and mausoleum of the Karađorđević dynasty, known for its impressive mosaics and vineyards.
Aranđelovac and Bukovička Banja (55 km) – a spa town famous for its beautiful park, mineral springs, and contemporary sculpture collection in the Bukovička Spa Park.
Vrnjačka Banja (65 km) – the most famous spa town in Serbia, known for its wellness tourism, parks, and thermal springs.
Šumadija wine region – the surrounding hills are home to numerous wineries offering wine tastings and authentic local gastronomy.
The Šumadija region is widely known for its traditional Serbian cuisine, vineyards, orchards, and picturesque landscapes. Visitors can enjoy local specialties, wine tasting, and cultural heritage while discovering the traditions of central Serbia.
Time Zone & Climate
Serbia, including the city of Kragujevac, is in the Central European Time (CET) zone, which is one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1). The country observes daylight saving time during part of the year, moving the clock one hour forward to UTC+2 from the end of March until the end of October. However, visitors coming in December will be in the standard time period, meaning that local time in Kragujevac will be CET (UTC+1).
Kragujevac has a moderate continental climate characterized by four distinct seasons. Summers are typically warm and sunny, with average temperatures often reaching around 25–30°C, while winters are generally cold, with occasional snowfall and temperatures that can drop below freezing. Spring and autumn are usually mild and pleasant, bringing moderate rainfall and comfortable temperatures that make these seasons particularly enjoyable.
Administrative / Logistic Information
By air
The nearest international airport is Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, located approximately 150 km from Kragujevac (around 2 hours by car). The airport offers direct connections with numerous European and international destinations. From Belgrade Airport, participants can reach Kragujevac by shuttle transfer, bus, or taxi.
Another option is Morava International Airport (Kraljevo), located about 70 km from Kragujevac, which operates selected regional and seasonal flights.
By train
Kragujevac can also be reached by train via the Serbian railway network, with connections from Belgrade and other major cities.
By bus
Regular intercity bus services connect Kragujevac with Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, and other regional centers. Bus transportation from Belgrade to Kragujevac is frequent and typically takes about two hours.
By car
Kragujevac is easily accessible via the Serbian motorway network. The city is located approximately 140 km south of Belgrade and about 160 km from Niš, making it convenient to reach by car from major cities in the region.
Currency
The currency used in Serbia is Dinar (abbreviated RSD). The exchange rate for 1 EUR is around RSD 117.5. Hotels should be able to change your money at the reception desk. If your hotel does not offer this service, you will find nearby banks where you can complete the transaction. Employees at the Reception desk usually do speak English, so feel free to ask them for additional information.
